This community was known as Number 1 after Massachusetts lawmakers granted it in 1735. Settlers, who came from Amesbury, MA, called it New Amesbury. The settlement was known as Jenness-town – after settler Richard Jenness – and Ryetown. John Wentworth; it was named for a member of his council, Jonathan Warner. The town was one of the last settled under British rule.
